Acid Mothers Reynols – “Vol. 3” – [VHF]
Preston Peace 5/22/2024 A Library

Japan’s Acid Mothers Temple and Argentina’s Reynols recorded together during a tour in Buenos Aires in 2017, and this is the third volume released from those sessions. These four long psych jams share the general vibe, if not sound, of some of both bands’ more sedate material.
Each has its own character- track 1’s paranoid piano perambulation gives way to funk(!) before ultimately yielding to violent piano dissonance and anarchy; track 2 sees scattered scraped metallics overshadow heartbeat-like drumming that relaxes into free, as a sparse bassline barely holds it all together; track 3 presents long meandering organ lines and placid vocals (both Reynols’ contribution); while the final track is the most rollicking of the set once it gets going, distorted guitar histrionics rearing their head several times, especially in the climactic peak before a calmer finale.
Far from boring, these jams are content to journey to strange places along the way to their ultimate destinations.
