Regan John Farquhar, aka Busdriver, son of the screenwriter from Krush Groove is rapper and producer from Los Angeles. Busdriver’s solo album, Temporary Forever, was released in 2002. Overflowing with tongue-twisting fast tempo lyricism. Moments fringing on slam poetry, dynamic indie hip-hop . FCC warning on tracks 3,12,16,18.

Id The Poet – “We Work Epic” – [Tidepool Music]

Arcanum   10/26/2016   CD, Hip Hop

ID the Poet is a Hip Hop artist raised in LA who now lives in San Diego. iD does most of his own production using Ableton, Protools, and live instrumentation on a Macbook. This is the first of two EP’s. Tracks 4 and 5 were my stand out favorites with the last 30 seconds of track 5 going into a nice switch to take it out. Language on track 2 FCC warning BULLSH*T.

Ghost Dog [coll] – [Razor Sharp]

Arcanum   8/4/2016   12-inch, Soundtrack

This movie is worth at least one or two watches. Produced by Rza from Wu Tang. FCC on A9, B5, End of B7, B9

Songs in the film that don’t appear on either soundtrack album include From Then Till Now performed by Killah Priest, Armagideon Time performed by Willi Williams, Nuba One performed by Andrew Cyrille and Jimmy Lyons.

The film has been interpreted by critics as an homage to Le Samoura??, a 1967 crime-drama by Jean-Pierre Melville starring Alain Delon. That movie opens with a quote from an invented Book of Bushido and features a meditative, loner hero, Jef Costello. In the same manner that Ghost Dog has an electronic “key” to break into luxury cars, Costello has a huge ring of keys that enable him to steal any Citro??n DS. The endings share a key similarity. Moreover, the peculiar relationship between the heroes of both movies and birds, as companions and danger advisers, is another common theme.

The film contains a number of references to Seijun Suzuki’s Branded to Kill, such as when a bird lands in front of Ghost Dog’s rifle scope, referencing the incident with a butterfly in Suzuki’s film. Ghost Dog shooting Sonny Valerio up the drain pipe is taken directly from Branded to Kill.

Cartoons are used as a motif that parallels plot developments. Handsome Frank watches a cartoon featuring Betty Boop corralling her pigeons moments before Ghost Dog, a fellow pigeon raiser, arrives to assassinate him. Ghost Dog is later seen handling his pigeons in the same manner as Betty. Boss Vargo watches a Felix the Cat cartoon wherein the Professor voices his frustration at capturing the elusive Felix and his magic bag, mirroring the mafia’s inability to find and eliminate Ghost Dog, who carries his weapons and equipment in a black briefcase. Vargo and his daughter, Louise, watch a Woody Woodpecker cartoon in the car, immediately after Ghost Dog has been distracted by a woodpecker while sniping in the woods. The cartoon features a staring contest between Woody and the Grim Reaper. Vargo’s daughter watches an episode of The Itchy & Scratchy Show (in which Itchy and Scratchy threaten each other with increasingly bigger guns, before blowing up the earth) before the equally violent battle which concludes the film.

Guru knows my questions before I ask them
Guru explained to me that one grows out of suffering
Guru knows I am sick before any symptoms show themselves
Guru has thrown me in the fire every chance he can get
Guru has heated my car up by sitting down in it
Guru has taught me, by example, the true meaning of discipline
Guru has taught me that happiness is attained when one realizes what one has
Guru has imparted knowledge that I have only begun to understand after some years
Guru has taught me about restraint and development
Guru has taught me how to see the bigger picture

Red Mass – “Ep Rouge N.2” – [Mando Mango]

Arcanum   4/5/2016   A Library, CD

Red Mass is a gathering of artists, writers and musicians from around the globe. E.P. Rouge N. 2 features seven tracks of heated and visionary 21st century Francophone freak-rock… Radio Recommedations are Noir et Blanc, Confession d un Chacal, and KDAVAR but its french so I guess the whole thing is an fcc. I picked up a pigface vibe so cue something up from them in conjunction but its French Pop, Punk, Psych, Rock…

Fraye, Sebastian – “Vol.1” – [Redefinition Records]

Arcanum   4/5/2016   12-inch, Hip Hop

Sebastian Fraye???s VOL. 1 showcases a selection of instrumentals that were created between 2009 and 2014. A multitude of both sampled and recorded instruments, tools and techniques were used throughout the album. The thread that ties them all together is through the use of vinyl. Sebastian felt that with his first official album, he needed to honor the traditions of the beatmaking craft and the artists that came before him???not only musically, but visually as well. This record is fascinating, accomplished and sample heavy. Makes for a great study.

Chatwin, Ben – “Sleeper Awakes, The” – [Village Green]

Arcanum   3/21/2016   A Library, CD

Written and recorded at Ben Chatwin’s(of Talvihorros) home studio in Scotland. Inspired by the writing of H.G. Wells, ‘The Sleeper Awakes’ is Chatwin’s first album to appear under his own name. ‘The Sleeper Awakes’ represents the idea of a future that has been and gone. Before the information and telecommunications revolution there was a beautiful yet weird, naivety about what the future might bring.A one hundred-year-old Dulcitone (a kind of portable piano) was used extensively, making it sit with modern electronics and synthesis. The pairing of older, traditional instruments with modern recording techniques and processes is something that Chatwin is very interested in.”
Sounds like Electro-Synth-Ambient for a Ballerina Song Box.

Ephat Mujuru Ensemble – “Spirit of The People, The” – [Bardwells]

Arcanum   3/21/2016   12-inch, International

This record invokes the soothing and focused sound of the Mbira. The Dzavadzimu Mbira is a symbol of the traditional culture of Zimbabwe. The njari is a less common type of Shona mbira originally introduced from Mozambique. It was quite popular in Zimbabwe during the mid-20th century, and frequently featured there in radio shows during the 1950’s and 1960’s.The liner notes in the gate-fold are a great guide to this work.It helped me a lot to read each individual song’s synopsis while I listened and the dreamed scenarios described.
