El Da Sensei & The Returners GT2 Nu World

leothelion   4/6/2011   A Library

Former member of the mid-90s Hip-Hop Group The Artifacts, El Da Sensei teams up with The Returners for the second time around and the first time on Coalmine Records. The first track We R Back starts off with a kingly like horns triumphantly announce a beat that stomps in hard. This is a track that gets right up in your face with a commanding delivery just reminding the listener he is back with a new album.

The Returners are like the Bomb Squad to the famed group Public Enemy as they are the production duo & DJs from Poland on this album.

The tracks on this album I felt were good were Goin To War featuring Treach from Naughy By Nature and Knowledge Be The Key featuring Rakaa Iriscience. The other tracks on the album were good, but not as nice as Goin To War or Knowledge Be The Key. But overall it was a good album listen to.

Just some production side notes, the album does have foul cuss words on most of the songs. So if anyone was interested, this would be an album worth cleaning up for regular play if someone wanted 8hr book credit.

Kelan Philip Cohran and Legacy present “African Skies”

leothelion   3/1/2011   A Library

This recording was well put together musically. It has great melodic instrumentation with Bass Clarinet, Congas, Piccolo String Bass, Flute, Guitar and Harps with a strong jazz feel to it. This album African Skies was influenced and realized in 1993 after the passing of a fellow band member and mentor of Kelan Philip Cohran Herman Blount (better known as, Sun Ra). This was publicly heard for the first and only time at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois in the same year. Kelan Philip Cohran aka Big Phil is very talented musician, he plays at least four instruments on this recording. The first track, Theme invites you into the recording with a chat and then the beauty of the music comes in real nice. White Nile is heavenly to the ears. But my favorite piece is Cohran Blues, it has soulful beginning with trumpets that gives you a feel of being in a blues bar in New Orleans, then a lady comes in with a sassy soulful Baptist Church like verse that was just awesome. I love it. The Jazz Collective Show should really fall in love with this recording. Overall, this is a nice recording. This recording is very pleasant to the ears.

Production note: Since this was a live recording some songs don’t start right away. These recordings are good for music beds for PSA or SCs.

Willie Wright, Telling The Truth

leothelion   2/15/2011   A Library

This is sweet music for the soul. Is how I would describe this project. This album is incredibly beautiful work from Mr. Willie Wright. He has soulful voice a like Lou Rawls, and his lyrics are not complex, they get right to the point.

Nantucket Island, has a beautiful feel like you want to have a island drink sitting under a straw umbrella on the sandy shores of paradise. I’m So Happy Now and Indian Reservation,??are feel good songs that will lift your spirits up. Indian Reservation, is a song that he wrote about his Mom that has Cherokee roots. I really dug Right On For The Darkness, this is a cover song that Curtis Mayfield originally did. This song has a nice swing to it.

Overall, this is a good album for your listening pleasure. There are some songs that maybe very mellow for some people but you can fill in the gaps where you might want to mellow out your show a little bit.

Just some production side notes, for those people that do production checkout the Intro’s on this project you may can use them to do something here at the station. This CD came with a 5″ inch vinyl you can play at 33 rpm.
