Kingdom of Not – “Music from the Heaven on top of Heaven” – [Self-release]

Mister S   8/20/2022   12-inch, A Library

KINGDOM of NOT is BUDD UNDERWOOD & THE SLOW POISONER

12″ Vinyl

Released April 2022

For a moment, suspend disbelief, and imagine you are in a room with a number of the following characters:

Tiny Tim / “Weird Al” Yankovic / Ann Magnussen and Kramer of Bongwater / Spinal Tap / Tim Burton / David Lynch / David Byrne / Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh / Flaming Lip’s Wayne Coyne / Camper van Beethoven / Carl Stalling / Damon Albarn.

This album may be the result of such a composition of individuals and performance enhancing substances… or not. Musically satirical, lyrically clever. With delivery full of puns and fun! Poppy-silly-demented get your goof-on and kook out rhythms.

Veik – “Surrounding Structures” – [Fuzz Club]

Mister S   8/7/2022   A Library, CD

Veik are another band I discovered traversing various rabbit holes of musical genres during my work from home status due to circumstances created by the pandemic. This particular rabbit hole was again located in France. I don’t recall if I came across them via their label or an algorithm as I had also come to discover the band Vanishing Twin who they collaborated with on a remix of the track Honest (I Don’t Wanna Know). Again, I reached out to the band and Boris the band’s drummer/percussionist responded. Luckily again the rest of the world speaks much better English and French than myself and sent me a 24 bit .wav file for the station to add! Merci!

The band creates an evocative universe of their own. It is an atmosphere that is both hypnotic and disturbing. Synthetic and acoustic rhythms flown over by a voice that harks to the lifeless vocals of Suicide’s Alan Vega. Chateau Guitar is the most straightforward guitar track that will likely see lots of airplay. Don’t miss out on any of the other tracks. Great rhythms and haunting subject matter to cogitate upon during the current socio-cultural political times of today, and perhaps even more pressing, the future.

“We hesitated a lot and took a few days before writing the following post, as we feel neither legitimate nor qualified to deal with the topic and as we did not want to give the impression to take advantage of the tragic situation of the war in Ukraine. However, we felt the need to express our support for the Ukrainian people for several reasons.

In 2017 we released ‘Maidan’ on an EP whose theme was the 2010s protest movements. ‘Maidan’ was written as an attempt to grasp the contrasting faces of Ukraine and what was happening there at the time. Moreover, the name of the band is also imbued with this imaginary. Among its multiple origins, the name Veik is a reference to Kiev (Kyiv) in reverse.”

Slift – “2016: Spacetrip for Everyone” – [Six Tonnes De Chair Records]

Mister S   8/7/2022   A Library, CD

Slift are a band I discovered via the Levitation Live series on ewetoob stuck working from home during the pandemic.  The Slift session is a must watch! From the location to the acoustics, I found myself itching to see these guys live.

2016: Spacetrip For Everyone is the first entry into my personal collection before I reached out to the band to see if I could obtain the most recent album on behalf of the station, providing the band link from the kfjc web page, Ummon and/or the Levitation Live album. Both were sold out but they offered to send me 24 bit .wav files to my joy!

Slift are influenced and are of the Prog, Psych-rock denomination with the energy of punk and metal. I am sure there are many dj’s at the station who will enjoy this title with title with another to come soon. I won’t name bands that have had an influence so that you can form your own thoughts.

If you enjoy Carson Street’s show and reviews, this title will be one to add to your playlist. Many thanks to Slift, the Music Department for the add and Carson Street for a link to an interview with the band after I sent him my discovery!

Mister S   8/7/2022   12-inch, Hip Hop

12″ Vinyl

2004 Release

Produced by Madlib

DJ Norman Rockwell Side A

DJ Sapien Side B

Great beats and samples in the Madlib tradition. Vocal tracks contain FCC’s, DJ’s beware. Favorite track is Beyond, Beyond from the b-side. 2nd favorite is also on th b-side, the instrumental track from Beyond, Beyond. Dig it!

Greyhound – “A Storm Is Coming” – [Hands]

Mister S   8/3/2022   A Library, CD

German club music. Sturm and drang. Hard-hitting, relentless unforgiving rhythm’n’noise. A deep breath of darkness that comes with the 15-track-storm, a conclusion reached via the track titles.

Relentless beats from the low 100’s up to 150 plus. Most veer toward the high end. Dark and brooding with occasional barely discernible “vocals” can be heard in a few tracks. Rhythms at times evoke electroclash flavorings while others are more relentless, reminding this listener of 80’s electronic dance beats from Belgium and the UK.

Lots to work with. Play with the tempo and fine tune to your delight. Perhaps pepper with a spoken word track…

Boris – “W” – [Sacred Bones Records]

Mister S   8/3/2022   12-inch, A Library

Immersive. ASMR for Boris fans. A tonal tantric experience for all. Trademark distortion and delay guitar effects to create soundscapes from the ecstatic to that of thundering de-tuned dystopian dirge. Rhythmically diverse. Acoustic and electronic percussion used to contextualize each track. Each will pull the listener into its orbit.

Boris formed in 1992 and eventually arrived at the band’s current lineup of Takeshi, Wata, and Atsuo in 1996.

Recently, the group ramped up during the pandemic and released the most extreme album of their long and widely celebrated career, NO. Boris self-released the album, desiring to get it out as quickly as possible but intentionally called the final track on the album “Interlude” while planning its follow-up. Its successor came with W. NO and W weave together to form NOW, a duo of releases that respond to one another.

Released January 2022

Spunt, Dean / Weise, John – “Echoing Shell, The” – [Drag City]

Mister S   6/29/2022   12-inch, A Library

Released 2022.

Musique Concrete, Experimental, electronic freakout for the adventurous. Go down this rabbit hole of noise cut-up wildness and hang on to the handrail and do not let go. Wonderful heavyweight vinyl for the connoisseur of the black crack. Fans of Framework radio and industrial sounds will be in heaven, or perhaps hell. YMMV. Beware of what additives you choose for your listening experience and consciousness expansion.

Cleaver, Gerald – “Signs” – [577 Records]

Mister S   6/29/2022   A Library, CD

Released 2020.

Super groovy experimental electronica. Lo-fi synth beats with variable bpm from track to track. From downtempo to driving industrial style beats. Flavored with hints of Sun Ra-like electronic keyboards to hints of gamelan. Take in a good listen. Exhale. Enjoy.

Secret Chiefs 3 / Ishraqiyun – “Perichoresis” – [Web of Mimicry]

Mister S   6/17/2022   A Library, CD

2014 Release.

Rock, Folk, World avant-garde by SF locals. This is a Trey Spruance project who plays with fellow Mr. Bungle members Danny Heifetz and Trevor Dunn just to name a few of the participants. Tasty effects-laden guitar licks and electronic wizardry flavored with a melange of percussion that includes tabla, electronic and acoustic drums. Often creating a middle-eastern vibe. At other times there are parts that bring to mind James Blood Ulmer. Finally, there are tracks that have a dub-heavy groove. Worthy of a safety check before listening.

Black Arkives [coll] – [Justice League]

Mister S   6/17/2022   12-inch, Reggae

Recorded at The Black Ark in Kingston, Jamaica and produced by Lee “Scratch” Perry in the period between 1973 and late 1975.

On The Black Arkives Lee “Scratch” Perry explores the possibilities of his equipment, trying to get the sounds in his head onto tape and ultimately emerge from our speakers. This period is thought to be some of his most personal creations. Sonic euphoria.

Studio One DJ Party [coll] – [Soul Jazz Records]

Mister S   6/13/2022   12-inch, Reggae

This double album gatefold is a great place to enter into the world of Dancehall DJ’s. Included in the gatefold sleeve are not left over roaches, seeds or shake but fantastic liner notes about the various founders of the genre for those seeking entry into a wonderful world of reggae music. Roll a spliff of less than quality ganja utilizing the gatefold, perfect for filtering away the seeds. Recline comfortable and take a listen both on your headphones and also your speaker system when you can play at maximum volume. Studio One is a classic provider of reggae of all genres, this in particular features some of the greats of Dancehall.

CIA Debutante – “Dust” – [Siltbreeze]

Mister S   6/13/2022   12-inch, A Library

Gloomy Lofi low BPM electronica. Almost deadpan spoken word vocals remind me of Lady Godiva‘s operation by the Velvet Underground. Imagine the Sleaford mods on drugs that make you very slow. Simple synth sounds hark back to 80s electronica. Oddly interesting and somewhat disturbed sounding. Could be layered in with another track playing simultaneously by the adventurous dj. Definitely worth at least a few listens if you are into a gloomier sounding electronica experience. 33 rpm but try pitching down further or pitching higher as well as playing at 45rpm.

Sky Furrows – “S/T” – [Tape Drift Records]

Mister S   6/13/2022   12-inch, A Library

Indie emo pop. Spoken word vocals. Nice simple clean single note and arpeggio guitar, bass and brush drum style accompaniment. Reminds me a bit of Red Stars Theory. Maybe a bit of a Mission of Burma feel about the band sound. Perhaps the Minutemen. Definitely a Lee Ronaldo accompaniment style. NYC downtown art rock.

Fronted by poet Karen Schoemer. Schoemer collaborates with bassist Mike Watt in Jaded Azurites, and with Wreckless Eric & Amy Rigby. Eric Hardiman, Mike Griffin and Phil Donnelly are members of psych rock unit Burnt Hills.

Clint Eastwood – “African Youth” – [Radiation Roots]

Mister S   6/4/2022   12-inch, Reggae

Do you like the dub? Do you like the reggae sound? Then you’ll dig this fantastic fantastic 12” vinyl by Clint Eastwood. On this album vocalist Clint Eastwood is backed by the Aggrovators (Sly and Robbie with Earl Smith on Guitar). Engineered by King Tubby. Produced and arranged by Bunny Lee. Listen on your speakers and also on your headphones so that you can discern the subtle nuance of sound. Take a taste. Enjoy an adult beverage. Roll and smoke. Eat and ingest or imbibe via the aural senses alone and you will be back for more.

Coll: Home Schooled – “The ABCs Of Kid Soul”- [Numero Group]

Mister S   6/4/2022   12-inch, Soul

A collection of child bands that sought to follow on the success of the Jackson 5. Check out the liner notes of this double LP gatefold for an interesting history of the recordings. A collection of adult promoters who in some instances are altruistic and others exploitive taking advantage of commercial opportunity. Musically if you’re a fan of RL Burnside, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, early Jackson 5, and Motown recordings you will be enthralled by this collection. Tight rhythm sections. Delicious wah guitar and twisty vocals by young unknown vocalists. Not one but two  dynamic LP’s.

Nyctalllz and Agdistiz – “Kozmik Noise” – [Syrphe]

Mister S   4/19/2022   A Library, CD

Dark ambient sounds derived from electronic processing in the vein of Zoviet France, SPK and F/i with a bit more of a rhythmic sense in the realm of Faust. Conjures mental images of grainy, anxiety inducing black and white films like Robert Eggers’ The Lighthouse and Darren Aronovsky’s Pi. Do not listen during commute traffic. Great late night traffic free driving music or indulging on 4/20.

“Nyctalllz is a noise, experimental and dark ambient music project formed in 2007 by Morego Dimmer (aka Xerxes The Dark/ Morego) in Tehran, Iran. Agdistiz is a noise and experimental music project from Romania. Both artists exchanged audio files through the internet, Kozmik Noize was born.”
