Isomer – “Nil By Mouth” – [Cipher Productions]
One-man project from Australian David Tonkin. Heady drone, bestial distortions, bristling static. For me this is evocative of war. Dark, anxious, productive beats seem to spin and throb like a helicopter. At times this feels politically charged, even as voices are straining to become intelligible. Track two features part of a 1968 speech from Black Panther/civil rights activist Stokely Carmichael, an interesting dimension.
