Quinteplus – “Quinteplus” – [Vampi Soul]
Cousin Mary 3/6/2012 12-inch, Jazz
Quiteplus was a jazz combo active from 1969 to 1973 in Argentina. Their music combines cutting edge fusion from the time (think Fender Rhodes keyboard) and mixes in Argentine influences. Lots of good energy and virtuoso playing on this two LP set. Sides A and B are from a 1972 studio session, C and D are from live performance. I liked all tracks, only B3 was a bit noodly for my taste. C1 and C2 (which track together) really pull out all the stops. Do not fear “Ode to Billy Joe”, it avoids the kitsch and goes off in some interesting directions. Most excellent solos from brass, keyboard, and sax throughout. D2 “Jose Blues” has a very fine lengthy drum solo.
Great fun! Recommended!
