Dead Cat Bounce – “Chance Episodes” – [Cuneiform]
Cousin Mary 11/5/2011 CD, Jazz
Dead Cat Bounce is a term meaning a slight uptick in the price of a stock that is overall declining – I’ll be darned if I can figure out how that relates to this sextet – four on reeds, bass and drums in the rhythm section. Well, the music itself is bouncy. All tunes were composed by sax and flute player Matt Steckler and are inspired by seemingly unrelated events and memories in this past. Titles are indicative of the variety of sounds – for example, Township Jive Revisited reminds one, in a way, of music from South Africa. Overall fun, and accessible.
