Saluzzi, Dino – “Giya Kancheli : Themes From The Songbook” – [Ecm Gmbh]

Cousin Mary   9/9/2011   A Library, CD

Giya Kancheli was born in Georgia (former Soviet state) and now resides in Belgium. In 2009 he put out a book called Simple Music for Piano based on works he had written for screen and stage. Kancheli’s son Sandro was key in getting this album made as a surprise for his dad’s 75th birthday.

All except the last track are for violin, vibraphone, and bandoneon (a type of South American concertina) as played by Argentine, Dino Saluzzi. The last track is voice and Symphony Orchestra.

The tunes are wistful and moody, mostly very simple and quiet. The music implies that these movies and plays were sad, possibly tragic. Beautiful, straight to the heart, not exactly minimal but with little complexity.
