Barnett + Coloccia – “Third Wilderness” – [Sige Records]
whngr 3/11/2024 12-inch, A Library

MODERATELY RELAXING ABSTRACTION
Neoclassical gravity suspension emitters, manipulated field recordings from nature, electronic drum loops, shimmering abstraction, throbs, glitch, manipulated ethereal female vocal atmosphere, synthesized organ and piano, manipulated short-wave radio samples and guided meditation, intervals of static, deep synthesizer swells, erratic cymbals, and electronic angelic minstrels are mixed together in a collage of improv collaboration by duo:
Barnett + Coloccia is Alex Barnett (Champagne Mirrors, Oakeater), a scientist and synthesizer/ambient sound maven with Faith Coloccia (Mammifer, Split Cranium, House of Low Culture…), a musician, graphic designer, and mother to (and wife of) Aaron Turner’s (Sumac, ISIS, Hydra Head Records, et alia) offspring. Barnett and Coloccia met in Chicago and became friends in 2005 around the intersection between their respective analytic and intuitive minds.
Two of these recordings are reinterpretations of previous releases from practice tapes of rehearsals for one of only two Barnett + Coloccia’s live performances for the Blackest Ever Black festival which was prepared for through remote correspondence and through visual scores, they were then mixed and refined post performance. Also included is a previously unreleased track from their “VLF” recording sessions and the track “Bristlecone” which were included for their “sonic and thematic compatibility.”
