Les Jazz Modes (Rouse, Charlie & Watkins, Julius) – “Rare Dawn Sessions, The” – [Collectables Records]
Cousin Mary 11/4/2009 CD, Jazz
This 2-CD set features gorgeous textures from the combination of Rouse’s tenor sax and Julius Watkins’ French horn which were recorded on the Dawn record label. The duo tried more commercial music on other labels, but this is the good stuff. Some warble-y vocals from Eileen Gilbert, reminiscent of some Duke Ellington works at the time. Some work from Janet Putnam for the jazz harp fans. Unfortunately, information is vague on exact dates from late 1950’s and the exact artists on each track.
Some standards, some originals, all very listenable and unique.
