Abrams, Muhal Richard – “Vision Towards Essence” – [Pi Recordings]
Cousin Mary 1/13/2009 CD, Jazz
Recording of 60-minute improvisation on solo piano,
divided into 3 ~20-minute parts. Despite the fact that
this was a live recording at the Guelph Jazz Festival (1998),
to my ear this is not jazzy or bluesy — more reminiscent of
Impressionist piano compositions such as those of Debussy.
Astonishing tour-de-force, although occasionally a bit bombastic.
Track 1 begins with ~25 seconds of applause. Track 3 ends with
~25 seconds of applause.
