Birds of Maya – “Celebration” – [Little Big Chief]
mickeyslim 2/5/2014 12-inch, A Library
It’s been three years since their last release, but this trio of Mike Polizze on guitar, Jason Killinger on bass, and Ben Leaphart on drums, display their skills on two insane acid-soaked blues jams.
A-side is “Picnic,” with the drums driving the bus, and the hypnotic blooze bass right behind it, the guitar yells and screams, going crazy in the backseat. Slows down to stoner speed a third of the way through, then slowly but surely turns it up to full throttle..
B-side brings the blues to the “BBQ” party in what actually sounds like a live performance; the cops busting up the show at the end may have given me a hint. Faster, shittier recording quality, and the addition of Harmonica Dan all helped me like this side best. It’s sloppier, more punky, and there’s a bunch of other yelling sounds. Its got vocals, I suppose from Harmonica Dan.
Take time in your show to fit a whole side in, and you’ll be glad you did..
