Staer – “Daughters” – [Gaffer Records]

Following in the ogresized footsteps of the great Nordic titans of Norwave, avant-rock power-noise trio Staer release their second full-length album. They actually made their live debut opening for Noxagt in 2010 if that gives you any idea of their sound; heaving sonic power of their Norwegian counterparts combined with the jarring angularity and unpredictability of bands like White Suns, even tilted leanings towards Starfuckers. Immediately from the opening march images are evoked of Viking gods hurling planets at each other, or the victorious approach to Valhalla. From there pure warfare ensues: Sharp, jagged guitar tones tear into megaton bass magma chained together by rapid-fire drum attacks in asymmetrical entropy (searing saxophone insertions from Ultralyd’s Kjetil Moster on 3, 6 as well). The two title tracks give you more something to grasp while One Million and Future Fuck are more like meteors falling through the atmosphere; scalding assaults of fiery crumbling matter. Any which way you turn your head will be spinning in the cacophonous polyrhythmia of musical war-mongering. Skal!
