Sutcliffe Jugend – “Pigdaddy” – [Cold Spring Records]

abacus   1/30/2016   A Library, CD

disgusting fucked-up filth-bile from British aberrations Kevin Tomkins and Paul Taylor aka Sutcliffe Jugend. tone shredding feedback congestion with low end buzz and drill; warped electronics and twisted vocalizations, shrill pelting and purging of inner torment and revulsion. full of grimace and gag, this is one of the most disturbing power electronics has to offer. beyond perverse, this gives me a tummy ache

Navitas Est Deus [coll] – [Scenester Credentials]

humana   1/29/2016   12-inch, A Library

On Side A we have Aseethe bringing us more noise than Mauul does on Side B. It’s all electronic-sounding, not musical at all, and sometimes it seems like there’s a locked groove on Side A, but there isn’t. Drone…check. Ambient…maybe, if your ambience borders on headache.

Hytta, Anne – “Draumsyn” – [Carpe Diem Records]

humana   1/28/2016   12-inch, A Library

This is a lovely album of spare music composed and played by Norwegian Hytta on Hardanger fiddle, viola d’amore, and vielle. Read the liner notes to get in tune with the music, which was inspired by imagining unpeopled landscapes and colors, particularly red and blue, and images of silent gardens and blind doors. Lovely classical and folk music.

Placazoa Dicatorship – “Photograph of Prisoner” – [Subruckus Collective]

abacus   1/28/2016   A Library, Cassette

chaotic noise/jazz layering from local boy Kevin Murray; short attention span overload extreme with tape manipulation/sampling, found percussion skittering and vibraphone improv all stacked together for both sides of this cassingle on his homegrown label Subruckus. Work Life shows no balance with some metal track (ID anyone?) thrown over the top for extra confusion. sounds like someone listens to too much KFJC…

Bruce & Vlady – “Reality, The” – [Munster]

Arcanum   1/27/2016   12-inch, Jazz

The album didn’t sell well upon its original 1970 released in Sweden, and has been long-forgotten since then. This is the first ever reissue of American Hammond player Bruce Powell and Polish drummer Wladyslaw Jagiello’s wonderful, unique record of hypnotic progressive jazz. Back of jacket is written in sweedish… Great Stuff.

3 Moons – “Astronomy of Dreams” – [Moon Glyph]

Arcanum   1/27/2016   12-inch, A Library

Droning psychedelics, humming electronics, slow paced plucked guitars and male / female vocals being sung in haunting unison.slow moving free form jams that build with cosmic intensity. An opportunity to stare upwards at southern oscillating storm systems. In Mars in Phrygian and Mercury in Hypophrygian, ancient Greek musical modes are deployed to invoke useful aspects of these planetary forces, based upon an arcane system of inter-disciplinary correspondences.Phrygian and Hypophrygian correspond to the element fire (warm, dry) and control the Choleric humor. It is opposed to Phlegm, and therefore its characteristics are boldness, exuberance, and passion; it is associated with the ego and will. When well tempered it leads to courage, a quick wit, and leadership, but in excess it produces pride, rashness, irritability, and a hot-tempered, violent personality. Phrygian invokes the power of Mars, which is warm and dry, whereas Hypophrygian invokes the power of Mercury, which is neutral, and reinforces both good and bad characteristics ). H.A.A.R.P. was originally written for a crypto-environmental Vaudevillian paranoid comedy play / folkloric public service announcement put on by a group of radical mutants in Minneapolis. This Old Christ was brought on by a weird encounter with Lee Scratch Perry in LA. Smoke from the Well takes us into make damaged American ghost conjuring while Nazi Zuni Lulu Annunaki might trigger the recovery of lost memories of UFO rides and close encounters. This album is a psychic core sample of a dream planet in some alter-dimensional cosmos here to augment our perspective in this dubious reality.

Los Feo Faces – “Haters Camp” – [Grimm Image]

Arcanum   1/27/2016   CD, Hip Hop

Los Feo Faces is an artist collective and independent record label based out of Honolulu, Hawaii, “Haters Camp” being a mixtape feturing artists from El Paso to Colorado back to Hawaii. Those who have phased out in the past and have yet to link up in the future have only the casuality of life to blame that they are not on HATERS CAMP, Feo’s first concentrated group effort. Featuring production by in-house producers Front Business, Everybody Knows and AIKER METATRON, HATERS CAMP becomes the screen on which this distorted and crass movie plays. Track 4, 6, 8**, 11**, 12** Track 5 has some cool switch digital switches @ 1:32 mark and cold drops @ 2:04 FCC’s and drug refs. are plenty

Wet Ones – “S/t” – [Slovenly]

mouthbreather   1/27/2016   A Library, CD

Kansas City, Misery garage punk set comprised of ex FAG COP and MOUTHBREATHERS peoples. tight, catchy, crunchy punk with psych elements sprinkled in. reminds this mouthbreather of a thrashy King Khan & BBQ Show, Thee Oh Sees, and Black Lips. short tracks with a few FCCs, as noted. yum it up

Mad Genius – “2012” – [PIAS]

mouthbreather   1/27/2016   A Library, CD

‘a sonic time capsule for the end of days…which didn’t actually end’
audio samples of politics, crime, and zombies compiled with tunes to give us the big picture of pre-apocalypse 2012.

Nocturnal Blood – “Abnormalities Prevail” – [Hell’s Headbangers]

abacus   1/26/2016   A Library, CD

bestial spewing of black bile and blood from The Ghastly Apparition unleashed from his usual Nuclear Desecration to wallow in a most feral fervor of ritualistic depravity. death enticing ravaging defilement with doom damaged billowing of ashen smoke and debris, raging with equal ferocity across all instrumentation, this one man demon will cultivate a most gratifying of evil inspirations. gnash and fume till you bleed.

ilitch – “periodikmindtrouble” – [Superior Viaduct]

abacus   1/25/2016   12-inch, A Library

4-track collage kosmische from Parisian tripper Thierry Muller, originally released in 1978 on Oxygene Records and included on the legendary NWW list. shimmering guitar loops, cosmic synthscapes, these kraut journeys explore both ambient and abrasive sonorities. the title track a sidelong of organ freekout minimalism, while the A-side’s Sequences are more angsty guitar driven tension building; the Derriere track stands out, delving deeper into acoustic expressiveness. first time reissue of the influential debut LP that set the stage for a gorgeous yet unsettling body of work.

Hafler Trio, The – “Fuck” – [Touch]

abacus   1/25/2016   A Library, CD

part two of trilogy precluded by Masturbatorium and followed by the never released I Love You, live recorded sexual energies in tantric resuscitation and paranormal pulsations; strict concentration of inherent self-contradiction emanating resonant frequencies of fatigue in delectation. ecstatic haze of swaying dissolution into dissociated dreams of faded trajectories, lost and broken. a ritual of eroded desire and self-absolution. a sonic mapping of the male orgasmic process.

G*Park – “Gour” – [Tochnit Aleph]

abacus   1/25/2016   12-inch, A Library

newest work by Swiss musique-concrete composer and plankton fisherman Marc Zeier. an elusive founding member of the Schimpfluch-gruppe, he employs a similar found-sound-psychosis technique of composition but with his own distinctive, more minimal approach, blurring lines between natural/synthetic, real/imagined, internal/external sounds. hyperconscious dissociations lost in the cryptic micro-acoustics of day to day, these pieces can be layered for unsettling additions or played alone for the most mundane of paranoias; recorded at 45rpm, or play at 33 for ultimate audio erosion. impositions to violate your consensual reality

Woods, Billy – “Today, I Wrote Nothing” – [backwoodz]

Arcanum   1/24/2016   12-inch, Hip Hop

Billy Woods claims Washington D.C. as his hometown but has spent much of his life in New York City. Founder of the record label Backwoodz Studioz,Once part of the Super Chron Flight Brothers he is one half of the duo Armand Hammer w/ “Elucid who makes appearances on this 2xLP along w/ L’Wren, Henry Canyons, and Curly Castro. Music by Messiah Milk and Blockhead and other var. producers. Lyrically this well written and overall feels slow, grimy. ominous parallels , east coast overcast, metaphorically ghetto red hot.?? The album is a collection of short songs and vignettes that form a cohesive meditation on life???s journeys and death???s hiding places. FCC beware.

Chamberlain, Don – “San Francisco Earthquake!, The” – [San Francisco Record Company]

billiejoe   1/20/2016   12-inch, Soundtrack

Recreation/interpretation of the news from the 1906 SF earthquake and fires. Two side longs. Fact checked by the California Historical Society. Sounds are rumbling trolley bells, news announcer, voices narrating, fire. Mostly actors recreating news interviews about damage looting fires and rescue efforts. Mention of actor John Barrymore and one guy pretending to be Jack London. Laughable and horrifying at the same time.
— Billie Joe Tolliver

Walls – “Urals” – [Kompakt Schallplatten]

Kai Sync   1/20/2016   A Library, CD

Sam Willis and Alessia Natalizia’s third and last album as Walls; alt-techno music bouncing between aggressive beats with delicate guitar lines mixed in and more ambient/cosmic synthesizer soundscapes, even some electro Moroder disco and Tangerine Dream elements as contributions. It also has traces of EBM (Electronic Body Music.) Some of the material reminds me of James Holden’s recent escapades. This short album took four years to make and they had plenty of time to figure out what each track consisted of.

Silk Saw – “Empty Rooms” – [Art-Zen]

Belladonna   1/19/2016   A Library, CD

aka Belgian duo Gabriel Severin, Marc Modea. This release is based on material they composed for a French play Les Chambres Odipe, an adaptation of holderlins translation of Oedipus Tyrant, where Silk Saw played live for every performance. This material was reworked post performance in their studio but is apparently just as creepy as the show. Rhythmic hums, clicks and drones with a dark and sinister undercurrent. French spoken word and sinister beats add to your difficult listening enjoyment.
