Sarin Smoke – “Vent” – [Mie]

billiejoe   6/10/2015   12-inch, A Library

Guitar duo Tom Carter of Charalambides and Pete Swanson of Yellow Swans. Noisey and gets a little psychedelic. Mostly tonal. Goes from spacey to pretty. Sarin is a chemical weapon.

Exacerbacion – “Desastre Humano” – [SPHC]

billiejoe   6/10/2015   7-inch, A Library

Grindcore from Costa Rica. Intro is a pleasant acoustic guitar solo. This limited edition album came out last year. Vocals are in Spanish and are translated in the liner notes. Songs are between fifteen seconds and one minute.

Grayskul – “Zenith” – [Fake Four Inc.]

billiejoe   4/22/2015   CD, Hip Hop

2013 hip hop album from the duo of Onry Ozzborn and JFK out of the Pacific Northwest.
These guys have worked with Oldominion, Dark Time Sunshine, The Gigantics, Barfly, Norman, Sleep, Aurora, Ceshi, Maker, Mr. Hill, Aesop Rock, Cage, Slug, and Fakts One among others. Tons of guest musicians and MCs on this album. Some really good beats and pop feel but lyric and rhyme focused. Singing on several tracks gives it a popular vibe. Songs about politics, pot, sex and being grateful.
I like the flows on track 4, 10, 11, 12 and the beats on 6,12,16.
FCCs 1, 2, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 16, and 18.

Pavone, Jessica – “Knuckle Under” – [TAIGA Records]

billiejoe   4/15/2015   12-inch, A Library

Composer and violinist from NY. Her work can be found under the Tzadik label among others. We don’t have a lot of her solo work so this is great that we have this. She’s also in the library in the duo Normal Love. Unique experimental artist. Side A is a lot of vibrations. Minimal but very powerful. Noisey at times. My favorite was the string farts on the B side. There are vocals on last track on B side.

Ass Jazz Vol 2 [coll] – [Pet Goat, The]

billiejoe   4/15/2015   A Library, CD

Volume dos! Because you wanted more. Punk, metal, skronk, jazz, noise, and some vocals here and there. Most are recorded live performances. Each track is different but excellent. I can even forgive the organ on track 10.
No FCCs that I could hear.

Kacirek, Schneider – “Shadows Documents” – [Bureau-b]

billiejoe   4/1/2015   A Library, CD

German duo of Stefan Schneider and Sven Kacirek. Inspired by travels to Kenya, the beats are heavy and ambient at the same time. They feel like background but definitely hold their own. I couldn’t decide which track was my favorite. They each are good in their own way. We’ve got loads of Sven in the library.

Mitchell / Marsh / Edwards – “Improvisations” – [Otoroku]

billiejoe   4/1/2015   12-inch, Jazz

45 RPM
Roscoe Mitchell on sax, Tony Marsh, on drums, and John Edwards on bass.
First and last time these three UK musicians played together. Last night of Mitchell’s residency at Cafe OTO, the alternative venue in London. They balance skronk and melody really well. Gorgeous. Marsh passed soon after the recording.

Jaworzyn, Stefan – “Annhilating Light, The” – [Kye]

billiejoe   3/18/2015   12-inch, A Library

A is throw you up in the air and drop you
B is bleep bloppy space sounds
Noise and experimental pioneer and previous member of Skullflower. He took a big break and came back just a couple years ago. He started the label Shock, which has an impressive list of artists on it like Divine Horsemen, Current 93, The Dead C, and Nurse With Wound. We have a lot of his stuff. He said in an interview: “Oasis of Filth is a live recording on a digital synth I was tinkering with. In the way these things happen I thought, ‘Wow, that sounds fucked up, better record it.’ I recently described it to Scott (Foust) along the lines of ‘a psychotic experimental piece that sounds like a lunatic trapped in some installation and banging the door against his head in an attempt to make it all go away.’ Think of it that way. Cast Out…Here I wanted to produce something more menacing and unsettling.”

Allbee, Liz & Burkhard Beins – “Mensch Mensch Mensch” – [Alt. Vinyl]

billiejoe   3/18/2015   12-inch, A Library

First side is chimey humming bassy. Tuning forks that sound like singing bowls. Then a roaring like boiling water that becomes an airplane with tapping clicks. Either speed is delightful. B side has clanking smacking running rolling crashing and some l/r channel play. Also a wind/rustly sound, ominous piano, then roaring. This would be fun for noisers to layer. Or play it on its own.

Revolutionary Snake Ensemble – “Forked Tongue” – [Cuneiform Records]

billiejoe   3/11/2015   CD, Jazz

Swingin??? New Orleans brass jazz via Boston led by saxophonist Ken Field. This is their second album from 2008. Includes covers of White Wedding and Que Sera Sera. Also has traditional folk songs and originals as well. Seeing them live would probably be quite an experience as they seem to dress the part and bring a performance element to their art. Vocals on track 8.

Fusinato, Marco – “Ambianxe” – [Spring Press, The]

billiejoe   3/4/2015   12-inch, A Library

Australian noiser and installation artist. Recorded in Tokyo. Crunchy squeeky. Sounds like the needle is messed up. Guitar? Maybe. B side sounds like a buzz saw, feedback and static. Be aware, there’s about six minutes of silence and a loud come back of noise. False end with scattered scratches and then clapping.

This Gift Is a Curse / Hexis [coll] – [Monotonstudio]

billiejoe   3/4/2015   7-inch, A Library

Seven inch split from two metal artists. Hexis from Denmark is doomy with muddy cookie monster vocals. This side chugs along like a march of war. This Gift is a Curse from Copenhagen starts with a quiet noise opening. Super fast guitar and drums with pukey vocals. False ending. No FCCs.

Conners, Loren/ Vapour Theories [coll] – [Carbon Records]

billiejoe   2/4/2015   A Library, CD

Split album. Both sides are zoned out guitar with effects. The first side was recorded live in London in 2011. The volume changes a lot on the first track. Vapour Theories is Michael and John Gibbons of Bardo Pond. The two artists complement each other well and there is something for everyone on this album.
