Karkowski, Zbigniew / Antimatter – “khz” – [Auscultare Research]

billiejoe   2/29/2016   A Library, CD

Callab between Anitmatter (Xopher Davidson) a visual artist from Oakland and Zbigniew Karlowski. One 45 minute track of electronic juiciness. Came out ten years ago. They have collaborated since. Deceptively quiet at times. Level fluctuations.
Marcel Duchamp quote on cover as “R. Selavy.”

Wiener Kids – “What a Mess” – [Self Release]

billiejoe   2/29/2016   CD, Jazz

Jazz ska band for Saturday morning cartoons. Playful and orderly at the same time. Aram Shelton, Cory Wright, and Jordan Glenn from Oakland and guests. Primarily percussion, brass, and winds.
I liked the drum solo on track 8.

Hure – “Sog” – [Self Produced]

billiejoe   2/24/2016   A Library, CD

From Berlin. I would call this grunge noise. It is repetitive and unrelenting. Hure means whore in German. Last track has silence between the 4 and 10 minutes.

MITB is noisey noise. They are the LA project that has been around forever and has had many members and collaborators. Weise and Wood did this one.
I sure enjoyed both sides.
Sibe B ends in a locked groove.

Homler, Anna and Moshier, Steve – “Breadwoman & Other Tales” – [RVNG]

billiejoe   2/17/2016   A Library, CD

Anna Homler LA based performance artist and vocalist. Breadwoman has been a character she has played in her performance art since the 80s. She often sues the themes of apothecaries and healing in her work.
Sounds like tribal beats and chanting in her own made up language, sometimes spacey beats. My favorite track was Sirens because of the warlby gurgly vocals and the eerie ambient background.

Chattaway, Jay – “Maniac” – [Varese Sarabande]

billiejoe   2/10/2016   12-inch, Soundtrack

1980 horror film about a scalping serial killer loosely inspired by the Son of Sam.
There’s a fun part where there is a loud heart beating and it sounded like it was skipping to me for a second. Disturbing monologue on side a. Mostly creepy synthy goodness.
— Billie Joe Tolliver

Nekromatik [coll] – [One Way Static]

billiejoe   2/3/2016   12-inch, Soundtrack

Soundtrack to a 1980s German horror film about screwing dead bodies. Straight up orchestral and then suddenly screeching, also droney at times. And piano and strangling/choking sounds. Tribal rhythms and strings. Great to listen to before bedtime.

Boyle – “Zeitlos” – [Self-released]

Wisconsin based minimalist composer. Experimental and fun sounds. Very mellow and enjoyable. Would be good to layer or use as a bed, also great on its own. Five discs and thirteen tracks named after the day they were recorded. Play your favorite date! Boyle did a live mic in 2012 and is on that year’s Devil’s Triangle. We have tons of their stuff in the library.

Billy Bao – “Communisation” – [Fuck Yoga Records]

45 on one side, 33 on the other!
Noisey screaming feedbacky percussiony explosion.
They are Alberto L. Martin, Billy Bao, Mattin, and Xabier Erkizia.
A lot of volume and channel fluctuations. Very dynamic album, doesn’t just stay in one place for a whole side, it’s a shifting wild ride. First track references a Spanish woman who killed herself after being evicted which fueled protests regarding home foreclosures in Spain.
— Billie Joe Tolliver

The word Gethsemane came up in the lyrics. It “is a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, most famous as the place where Jesus prayed and his disciples slept the night before Jesus’ crucifixion.”
