Das Torpedoes – “Qu Nar” – [eh?]

billiejoe   7/27/2016   A Library, CD

AKA Charles Lareau and Voost Vistz. Field recordings. Garbled windy gobbledygook but good! Motorcycles, bar (including juke box music), subway loudspeaker, piano, street chatter, train moving across track, and other tasty treats.

TenHornedBeast – “Elphame” – [Neuropa Records]

billiejoe   7/27/2016   A Library, CD

Drone doom metal from Belgium that will rattle your brain and launch you into a nebula. Heavy without being overpowering. Features bell tolling and birdies. The second track is a very comforting 42 minutes.

Impact Test – “Seven Songs of Darkness” – [RRRecords]

billiejoe   7/20/2016   A Library, CD

Started by the Milwaukee kids from Boy Dirt Car. This album is from 1993. Noise jazz with reading/spoken word about ethnic cleansing and bombings of cities. Bells and horns and synth sounding like airplanes. Tribal drumming. Non sequiturs about hot dogs and martinis and fatness. Creaking door sound that goes on too long on track four is amazing. Track nine gets bluesy. Track ten is the crunchiest.
FCC track 12

Inade – “Burning Flesh” – [Loki]

billiejoe   7/20/2016   A Library, CD

Spacey cooing. Some trancey beats and vocalization, like Gregorian monks chanting. Or a didgeridoo. Tat tvam asi is sanskrit for “thou art that.” German electronic goodness without an “uh” at the end. Kind of.

Outsound New Music Summit 15 [coll] – [Self Produced]

billiejoe   7/20/2016   A Library, CD

This non-profit has been supporting experimental artists since 2002. This album is a taste of the performances to come this week. Plenty of delicious skronky horns and playful sounds. I like track three, Brandon Evans, for some heavy brass and track nine, IMA, for its out this worldness.

Kichert Mit Freunden [coll] – [Self Release]

billiejoe   7/13/2016   7-inch, A Library

Translates to “giggles with friends.” Came with nice note from <3 Howard mentioning that his group is on On The HiFi Vol. 11 and it is coming soon and thanking us for our support of vol. 10 last year. First tracks on either side are Lo Fi sounds of folk electronic melodies with fuzzy beats and second tracks are straight up rock folk.

BHZ – “Total Harmonic Distortion” – [Innova Recordings]

billiejoe   7/13/2016   CD, Jazz

Snappy twirly jazz. Track two is more serene than the others. All nice medium length tracks. Crashing percussion and twittering horns. Newly formed group of Brigid Burke on clarient, Steve Hall on pianio, and Mark Zanter on guitar.

Plaid – “Digging Remedy, The” – [Warp Records Ltd]

billiejoe   6/29/2016   A Library, CD

Andy Turner and Ed Handley. Also performed under the names The Black Dog, Atypic, and Balil. Sounds like electronic beats with danceable melody. Light and happy. I???m not familiar with their work but we have a ton of it in their library so you might be.

Clawed – “CLAWED Rob” – [Self Produced]

billiejoe   6/29/2016   A Library, CD

Uh oh! Creepy buzzy feedbacky with reverby awing and oohing. Warbles and static. Heavy. No idea at all about the artist so I welcome any enlightenment offered. Lots of sonic texture. Noise and electronic influence. Delicious like hard candy that breaks your teeth.

Lilly Joel – “What Lies In The Sea” – [Sub Rosa]

billiejoe   6/2/2016   A Library, CD

European experimentalism at it’s finest. Lilly Joel is composed of two sound sculptors, Lynn Cassiers on vocals and Jozef Dumoulin on keyboard. Cassiers is also from Tape Cuts Tapes. Dumoulin is of The Red Hill Orchestra. It sounds like found sounds carefully attached to each other. Dreamy and curious. Zondag (Dutch for Sunday) was my favorite track because it got real noisy at one point.

Mushroom’s Patience – “From the mountain” – [Hau Ruck]

billiejoe   6/1/2016   12-inch, A Library

Avant garde sounds from Rome. They formed in the 80s and started their own label Artopina Manufactory. They are very prolific and we have a few of their things. This sounds like ominous slow notes coming down and horns and creepy background sounds like water dripping. Creepy vocals that you can’t understand. Sounds like they may be backwards at times. Some of the sounds seem to be played backwards too.

Colley, Joe – “Psychic Stress Soundtracks” – [Antifrost]

billiejoe   5/25/2016   A Library, CD

Very prolific Bay Area sound artist originally from Florida. If you didn’t hear the mayhem special he participated in with Abacus and Max Level do it now. This album is very dynamic. It’s quiet in places then has sudden big crashes or screeches and literally makes you jump in your driver’s seat in your car. Or maybe that’s just me. Oscillations between drone and noise that I think a lot of djs will appreciate.
