Black Sun Productions and Val Denham – “Somewhere Between Desire and Despair” – [Tourette]

billiejoe   4/12/2017   A Library, CD

Abstract, spoken word, album released in 2009. BSP is Massimo and Pierce of Switzerland who are known for their live performances and underground porn. AKA Anarcocks. Worked with HR Giger. Denham is from England and has worked with Throbbing Gristle, Marc Almond, and Psychic TV. She is also a visual artist. Much like the album art I have no idea what is going on and that is okay! Lyrics about pain, trans soldiers, gender, despair, and hope.

Fella, James – “Inactive Parts” – [Weird Machine / Gilgongo]

billiejoe   3/22/2017   12-inch, A Library

Prolific artist from Arizona. Sounds like tones, knocking, buzzing, and noise crunch.
This album was made this year and is from a 2014 art installation that explored sounds and printmaking. What you hear are acoustic sounds played back in amplified volume. The title, “Inactive Parts” refers to the amount of time metal plates used for making records sit before being discarded if not used.

De Brauw, Trevor – “Uptown” – [Flenser]

billiejoe   3/22/2017   12-inch, A Library

Solo debut from the guitarist from Pelican. Also associated with RLYR and Chord. From Chicago. Sounds like humming buzzing tones from a chord organ with occasional acoustic and electric guitar, keyboard, vocals, and cat collar. Moody. Layered. Dramatic. Chill. This is one of my favorite kinds of rock n roll. Vocal on track 3. Spacey basey on track 4.

Palermo, Dario – “Difference Engines” – [Amirani Records/Amirani Contemporary]

billiejoe   3/1/2017   A Library, CD

Italian composer with two vocalists, percussionist, and a string quartet. Track one is your standard experimental strings. It’s so wild though I have a hard time imagining it being composed. Sounds like spacey screechy tones with operatic vocalizing on track two. Track three is male vocals and a little more dada and out there. Still excellent. Very long tracks let you really settle in for a transcending ride. My kinda jam.

Cage, John/ Sun Ra – “John Cage Meets Sun Ra” – [Sundazed Records]

billiejoe   3/1/2017   A Library, CD

Live performance concert in New York in the 80s. Big long synth freak outs. Cage voice blips and chanting in a non-language. Lots of silence. Untitled keyboard solo 3 and 5 are my favorite because they are nice and chaotic. We have the 12″ in the library but this has more songs. Not as many duets as I’d like but still very enjoyable. Highly recommended on continuous.

Etant Donnes – “Royaume/Aimant + Aimant” – [Penultimate Press]

billiejoe   11/9/2016   12-inch, A Library

This is a duo based in Grenoble, brothers Eric and Marc Hurtado originally from Morocco. This album was a CD released in 1991. This is a remastered 2016 release. Creepy whispers in French, swishes, smacks, crackles, stomps, tinkles. Very sinister. Even the laughs are not comforting. Royaume means kingdom in french. Aimant means magnet. Matin means morning. There’s some writing online about how it’s taoist and has to do with the four elements. Interpret as you will. More in the library for you to chew on.

Ascension – “LP” – [Fusetron]

billiejoe   11/9/2016   12-inch, A Library

Freak out rock guitar and drums. Screechy bangy. Tony Irving on drums and Stefan Jaworzyn of Skullflower and founder of the label Shock on guitar. Two side longs. Recorded in 1994.
Quite prolific duo. Check out their other stuff in the library.

Stromboli – “Stromboli” – [Maple Death]

billiejoe   10/26/2016   A Library, Cassette

It’s not your grandma’s cooking. It’s Nico Pasquini from Italy. Lap steel guitar and analog organ. Sounds like electro industrial noise. Nice crunch with a side of beats. It’s really quiet so turn it up!

Scum – “Upside Down” – [Oxen]

billiejoe   10/26/2016   A Library, Cassette

Scum (sou inomoto) is from Tokyo. It sounds like harsh noise and is a self-described cut up noise project. Scum has been making these audio assaults since 2010. “Unconscious disharmonic malfunction.” Side a is a healthy 17:15 and b is a decent 10:00 or so.

Art of Burning Water – “Between Life and Nowhere” – [Sleeping Giant Glossolalia]

billiejoe   10/19/2016   12-inch, A Library

Trio of UK metal dudes Mike McKenna, Geif Al-Robei, and Kunal Nandi.
They’ve produced a lot of albums and have been around for fifteen years. This is their latest from this year and the first in our library. They’ve also produced stuff with Harrowed and Nervous Mothers. Sounds like fast pain. Like ripping off a band aid. Most vocals are not easily understood but there are samples of dialog between songs.
FCC track 3 Barbara O’Reilly

Westerhus, Stian – “Amputation” – [House of Mythology]

billiejoe   9/7/2016   12-inch, A Library

Techno feels. Male falsetto. Norwegian guitarist who has worked with Jagga Jazzist and Puma. This album is on stylish white vinyl. He is described as a jazz artist but I don’t hear the jazz on this piece. I hear looping electronics and noisy guitar and high pitched ballady vocals. All him. B side is best.
— Billie Joe Tolliver

Jakobsons, Marielle V. – “Star Core” – [Thrill Jockey Records]

billiejoe   8/31/2016   A Library, CD

Synth and strings creating ambient drone and subtle melody. Her voice is not front and center but it is there. Jakobsons studied piano at Case Western before getting her MFA from Mills College. She is also an installation artist working with video and photographs and is based in Oakland. We have more of her work in the library.

Star Turbine – “Altitude” – [Sonic Meditations]

billiejoe   8/31/2016   A Library, Cassette

Doomy droney fuzzy spacey twinkly bright heavy deep meaningful. Self-described, “Improvised space age explorations” from Sindre Bjerga and Claus Paulsen from Copenhagen. I really liked it and want more, something that doesn’t happen that often.
— Billie Joe Tolliver

Hennix, Catherine Chris – “Live At Issue Project Room” – [Important Records]

billiejoe   8/17/2016   A Library, CD

Establish drone artist and professor of computer science Catherine C. Hennix from Stockholm and her ensemble Chora(s)san Time-Court Mirage. She has studied with the musician Pandit Pran Nath. This is an 80 minute track of vibrant tones. It’s a live performance of a mix of electronic and non-electronic instruments. Indian inspired sitar sounds along with chanting (sanskrit?) vocals that mimic the oming instruments and chirping/humming horns. Namaste.
– Pandit Tolliver

Parker, Sanford – “Lash Back” – [War Crime]

billiejoe   8/10/2016   A Library, CD

Self-described avant-garde doom post-metal industrial artist. Sounds like dark electronic rhythms. This album is a brand new release and the first from this artist in our library. Metal inspired beats that have the potential to appeal to multiple palettes.
— Billie Joe Tolliver

an Anthology of Turkish Experimental Music [coll] – [Sub Rosa]

billiejoe   8/3/2016   A Library, CD

Spanning six decades of work. Twirly synth, crunchy noise (track 2 disc 1), electronics, fluttery snaps (track 8 disc 1), low drone (track 3 disc 2), crackles, field recordings (track 6 disc 2), crackly texture (track 12 disc 2). All around good stuff. Artist profiles in the booklet.
