Jack of Heart – “In Yer Mouth” – [Born Bad]

Thurston Hunger   7/11/2012   A Library, CD

The bleed-off first cut “Baby Bitch” was recorded on your
first AM radio, hidden under your teenage bedsheets like
some kind of foreign porn. It blisters and demands overplay.
The rest of this rock ‘n rule record follows suit from that
trump card nicely. Jack of Heart is a three-piece band hailing
from Perpignan (which I believe translates as “the genitals”)
of France. Guitar-bass-drums with sloppy perfection: roadhouse
riffs, air-blare guitar, a slice of sitar to psych up the
closing number. Pierre Casteil aka Piero Ilove is singing in
English, but the words break apart, on “Lady Wilde” they
get gargled with champagne, on “The String Strong” they get
shouted into oblivion (or at least The Oblivians). Seriously
listen to “Marry Me” (point your ears past the sock-hop mania)
the chorus sounds like “dew one marie may.” Other times I
think they are trying to cuss, but it doesn’t matter, the
music just nails the essence of several flavors of rock.
The title track does have a leering phone call with “his
daughter” that borders more on obnoxious than obscene.
True story : when I first listened to this, I thought they
had a dedicated band member for making screeching raven
sounds to help invoke frenzy. Well, I wanted to believe
that. Anyway, this gets a 9 on my Caw-Meter….
