Vacuum Tree Head – “Thirteen” – [Pest Colors Music]

Thurston Hunger   6/1/2011   A Library, CD

Music in a blender, sometimes you just grab everything you can find,
pineapples, prog rock, orange juice, female harmonies, some 70’s
guitar, a few drops of old port, ice, warped intergalactic communications,
a Quinn/Martin production filmed in Micronesia but dubbed in Spanish
…and that only covers the first half of the album. This is what
happens when an inspired sonic scientist (Jason Berry) surrounds
himself with a ton of talented Bay Area folks, and he tries to give
them all a chance to display their dance moves on a surprisingly
short musical-chairs kinda album. Hell, just spend a few minutes
scanning over the artwork, and you can feel the creativity bursting
out. Shouts especialamente to vocalistas Lucey Foley and Sylvia Gordon
(their presence makes this a very different VTH) and Justin Markovits
is a boulder behind the drums. Massive. KFJC has hit a lot of great
Cambodian/Thai retro-pop heavily, and this 2009 album should trigger
that reflex and a whole lot more. For all it’s vibrant fanflare, this
CD is fleet…gone in a mere 21 minutes (and 15 songs at that). For
people who don’t thrive on the weird as much as I, if you blur your
eyes/ears a little this is a pretty dangtastic pop album. Made me
remember my nights spent on Hoppy Kamiyama’s God Mountain years ago.
