Millie & Andrea – “Drop The Vowels” – [Modern Love]

Not sure on the gender-bender name game, but Millie & Andrea are
Miles Whittaker (of Demdike Stare) and Andy Stott. Big names for
big beats, and with tracks like “Stay Ugly” and “Temper Tantum”
they whack out some thick rhythms. The latter has a stutter
step to it, and a few minutes in adds a dreamy synth to soften
the blows, but those tracks and the next three after seem to
jack-hammer the dance-floor as their primary directive. While
I know the title track has elements of Drum and Bass with a
sort of Rap instro bass too boot. “Corrosive” has old Berlin
digibeats with a “Moments in Love” two-chord melody drift.
But all means serve the low end. I feel like much of this
album works where house music wants to be. That thump cuts
through the drug cocktail and swimming pool ripples to bang
the eardrum. That being said this album’s bookend odd ball
elements, worked best for me thanks to dialing down their
insistence. Check “Gif Riff” culture clash (killer kalimba)
or “Back Down” for its Demdikian delirium and lastly, “Quay”
for its broken transmission for broken heroes. An eerie elegy
for the bass lines that died in flames earlier.
