Nightingales and Canaries [coll] – [Mississippi Records]

Cousin Mary   9/12/2013   12-inch, International

Side A are the canaries – Greek and Turkish female singers who lived in New York and produced these 78rpm recordings between 1942 and 1953. Side B are the Nightingales – Turkish women in Istanbul in the 1930’s who were the first female singers to be recorded there. Vocals are appealing, sound somewhat foreign to my western ears. What really makes these tracks are the fine instrumentals on oud, violin, drums, and clarinet. Liner notes show that these were no shy shrinking violets and imply that lyrics were on the racy side with double meanings that might be hard to translate.
