Goat – “World Music” – [Rocket Recordings]

Thurston Hunger   2/21/2013   A Library, CD

Who woulda thunk Othar Turner was talking about this 2012
Swedish surprise way back when he penned “Everybody Hollerin’
Goat?” You may hunt and gather psychedelic soul records, but
did you know there were modern-day tribes flourishing in
Korpilombolo, Sweden. Now maybe this is actually the Ngozi
Family with a working visa behind the costumes and masks, but
it just doesn’t matter. The music here is killer, across boundaries
a plenty…both sonic and social. The bassist plays the way you
felt when you stayed up for 48 hours, and still had another 24
to go. The female vocalists sing with the abandon that KFJC
darlings Afrirampo did, check out “Run To Your Mama.” The songs
are built upon drums that have sacrificed animals for aeons,
but they swing like heavy duty Fela Kuti. You want extra fuzz
on your guitar solos, they got you covered. Hankering for a dose
of Steve Mackay sax a la his work with the Stooges, check out
“Let It Bleed.” The Rolling Who? Weird-ass reverbed film clips,
check! Acoustic outro, listen to the severing end of “Goathead.”
A harmonium sweating blood, go to “Goatlord” the most mellow
number but the guitar slits its neck and the drone comes back
bigger and badder on the closer. Which itself wraps up with the
same riff from the opening Boubacar Traore cover, hey here’s the original

Goat (Greatest Of All Time?) may not be original in recipe,
but this short 38 minute release is cooked to near perfection.
This Goat is no one-trick pony, I just hope they keep adding
to the masks, mystery and music. For the mystery, this was
mastered by a former demon with Cold Meat Music connections!
