Mackay, Steve – “North Beach Jazz” – [After Music Recordings]
Funky, floppy, jazz from Iggy and the Stooges’ saxophonist, Steve Mackay! From what I can tell, it’s his first ALL jazz album. This is the second pressing of only 100 each. Mackay is backed as always by Carnal Kitchen buddy Marc Lampert on drums. Then they’re joined by Stooges bassist Mike Watt, guitarist Dick Deluxe and keyboardist Jeremy Long. Two of the track are credited to Mackay, while the others are credited to the whole group, so I’d imagine they’re impromptu jams.
By the work here, it’s obvious that Mackay is a seasoned veteran, sitting back and letting everyone do their thang, then coming in wailing and flopping around, but flopping gracefully. Watt keeps the funk rolling with smooth basslines and subtle transitions. Long delivers on keys, and has a badass solo on Windchime #2. Guitar is a little hard to hear.
Great jams, all recorded up in San Francisco, where Mackay’s lived for about 30 years now. Hopefully more jazz albums to come, maybe go all out funk? Doesn’t seem to be too many limits for Mr. Mackay…
