Golia, Vinny Sextet – “Abstractions and Retrocasualities” – [Nine Winds]

humana   8/9/2012   CD, Jazz

This is as playful as a game of tag with starts and stops and wonderful horn stylings from this seasoned sextet. The musicians express their poetic leanings in the song titles, and the West Coast goodness seeps through in every song. There is a nice mixture of experimental with traditional jazz in each song. The opening and closing tracks have more of a rock feel to them, and Alex Noyce’s electric guitar is showcased to great effect in 6 and 11.
