Barn Owl – “Lost In The Glare” – [Thrill Jockey Records]
Thurston Hunger 2/8/2012 A Library, CD
Where did it all start, Ben Chasny making the sign of his
Six Organs, Jimmy Page by the riverside for Bron-Yr-Aural
mantras? No, much further back. Some ancient muse on a
lyre while Narcissus gazed at his watery reflection? This
release adds to the oeuvre. More psycho-active than
psychedelic guitar drones, heavy on the resin, heavier on
the resonation. Add electronic shimmer to taste, but
simply the stirring of the strings elicits deep hypnosis.
The formula is as sturdy as a Greek pillar and as light
as the highest cloud. Connections go every where, to
non-guitar driven sonicscapes to Branca-based mob
musical mentalities. Evan Caminiti and Jon Porras
evidently are the Barn Owl, and their take on power
drone shines like the Mind Over Mirrors. Counting on
the Barn Owl to take roost in many headphones and
ideally nest live in the KFJC pit this year.??
