Shields, Christine – “In The Sun” – [Awesome Vistas]

Thurston Hunger   1/4/2012   12-inch, A Library

Pure sweetness, a hint of country tang but more like
Tarnation on a sun-dappled walk in an orchard instead
of the foggy perimeter of a crime scene. Still the
fruit here does have a defined psychoactive element,
watered by gentle rains from electronic keyboards and
soft sheets of lap-steel. Folk rock with the earthy
organic stamp of banjo, but winds of effect-pedal
whooosh blow the leaves around as well.?? A nice
marriage. Her voice is calm and pretty, the kind of
voice that attracts other voices to it, and when she
harmonizes with her friends, ethereality awakens.
Give your Espers records the night off, and warm
yourself by the tunes here. These tracks are as
graceful as the horses that populate ther lyrics,
and delivered with such beauty as to belie the more
bitter verses actually sung. Is that a definition for
melancholy? I don’t know but Christine Shields’ music
surely put a smile on every one of this ogre’s scabs,
imagine what it’ll do for you. An Awesome Vista,
indeed. Thank you!
