Kennel, Hans – “Habarigani Brass” – [Hat Hut Records Ltd]

Cousin Mary   9/7/2011   CD, Jazz

The first thing that struck me was the brass sound – this is jazz (sometimes bordering with contemporary classical) with no reeds and no percussion. The rhythm section is either missing or is provided by the bass. Sometimes I am reminded of brass chorales from classical pieces; other times a trumpet leads into almost a big band sound. A wide variety of sounds that swing from traditional to avant garde, always original. A must listen for trumpet fans.
