RM74 – “Before The End of June” – [Utech?]

Thurston Hunger   7/1/2011   A Library, CD

Not sure about the label on this, it was part of the Milwauk-ay
boot-ay from KFJC’s recent Utech-fest broadcast there, RM74 is
Reto Mader (which in my book would be an even better “bandname”).
He marries simple music, often primitive piano or guitar motifs,
with warped sound and samples to excellent effect. To me that
simple “live” music is the bed or even the drum, and then the
electronics on top is the melody or soloist. The leadoff track
spins a phasey tunnel drone, then introduces a sampled chant
that feels like Arvo Part guest-starring on Beneath the
Planet of the Apes. “Allergenic” feels a little like Low in
Maurizio Bianchi’s clothing. The track titles seem to stress
a theme of perhaps vulnerability, or frailty, or maybe just
the shadows of a Switzerland backroom, HinterZimmer glimmer.
The results are more emotionally complex than sonically so;
is this punk drone? Even without the water dripping in
“Unselfish” the ambience here is well chilled, and dark
like a nice night as opposed to a serial killer’s mind. Reto
is also part of Ural Umbo. Dig the ice Bern sound!
