Dave Dub & The Sutter Cain Gang – “Mind Police” – [Isolated Wax]

MSTiZA   4/13/2011   A Library, CD

Bad Brains meets Wesley WIllis meets Subcontents. Why were any artists ever possessed to merge punk/hardcore & rap/hiphop? To quote Dave Dub (Subcontents) from track 2, “it never made that much sense to me”. It appears that J the Sarge is the brain behind the project or at minimum the ‘beats’. The ‘backing tracks’ are orchestrated/mixed and not an actual band. That being the case I can forgive the cross-genre resurrection that shouldn’t have ever been tried in the first place. Of all the past attempts at this mixture, I can see why it works with Dave Dub. He is an aggressive MC with a no holds barred attitude. Mika 9 & J the Sarge guest on track 3 and are able to chop vox over the music. The music is a testament as to why I have always been adverse to the merging of rap & rock. Dave Dub & guests could have done this album with out the rock edge, and tracks 6,10, & 11 stand out from the ‘hard’er tracks. 3WR: RAP/ROCK, RIP.
