Album Review
Cartagena! [coll] – [Sound Way]
Cousin Mary 4/1/2011 CD, International
This album showcases the 1962-72 work of Colombian record producer “Curro” Fuentes who was known for picking great house bands and for his bass-driven dance tunes. Cartagena is a coastal city; the title of the collection implies a mixture of styles and music of natives as opposed to Europeans.
Spectacular percussion and beats, large ensembles probably influenced by the big band era, the cumbias you might expect from Columbia, and other styles as well (I heard the word “boogaloo” on track 11). You will be dancing!
