Blue Sabbath Black Cheer & Irr. App. (Ext.) – “Skeletal Copula Remains” – [Gnarled Forest Recordings]

Thurston Hunger   3/3/2011   12-inch, A Library

Everything fits on this, the collaboration, the sounds, the artwork,
the very name of the label (run by BSBC). There is that form of the
grotesque, that if you listen to it and look at it in its own dark
mirror, its true twisted beauty unravels. On this, I’m not sure where
the Blue Sabbath Black Cheer stop and Matt Waldron extends, the
forest is indeed gnarled, and shadows overlap shadows. Let’s start
with the sidelong B piece, “Glutton” early on there are thick doomy
guitar chords, the merest tainted whiff of song giving way to
bone-snapping munching sounds, and then a tunnel with a behemoth moan
and marching quakemen. Chains scrape and gates open to torment,
distant drums spasm. The three pieces on the initial side, adding even
more chefs to the sepulchral stew, show great restraint. There is some
beastly awakening and then a blitz of guitar and bombast of rail and
electronics, but it thins out to quick shrill blips and more waves and
hums. Vocal recoil dominates the magnetic pulse landscape of
“Brennschluss -> Extinction” If that is in fact the point at which this
side has lost its rocket fuel, I could not tell as the last piece
truly realizes the horror film for your ears as well as any slice of
this carefully crafted record. Gravitar’s Geoff Walker sends horn
salvos over the mix, Mason Jones solicit string eruptions. Well done,
crash cinematic noise for girlgoyles and hellboys.
