Szelag, Agnes – “No Summer Or Winter” – [Aggiflex]
Thurston Hunger 2/15/2011 A Library, CD
Divine disc of cello and electronic shape shifting. This 2008
issue predates the project Evon’s, “The Bees are Coming” but
its time is now (and the title fits the state of CA weather
currently). Szelag even provides some “Man-made Weather”
(strong enough for a man, but built for/by a wild woman.)
That ends with a flash of the old “Telegraph Melts” kinda
spiked cello shots. This EP’s like shoegaze without all the
annoying trace levels of song, super floatational without
being too air-tight. The use of cello may help keep it grounded,
although it is so deftly interwoven at times it is hard to tell
which sounds are coming by way of electronics and which from
organic matter. Too active to be filed as straight drone, but
so remarkably soothing you won’t care what it’s called.
Potentially this is what Tibetan bells dream of. Fine for
KFJC sleepwalkers and wide-eyed wonders with wider ears.
