Amadou & Mariam – "Welcome to Mali" – [Nonesuch]
aarbor 1/19/2022 A Library
Amadou and Mariam always have wonderful dark glasses on in their pictures because they have both been blind since childhood. Born in Bamako, Mali, they met at a school for the blind. Their music mixes traditional Mali sound with rock guitars, Syrian violins, Cuban trumpets, Egyptian ney, Indian tablas and Dogon percussion. In combination these elements have been called “Afro-blues”. This album was nominated for a Grammy. It is from 2008 which is close to the peak of their careers. The tracks show their versatility and their musicianship. AArbor
