Persian Set/Suite For Violin, Piano, & Small Orchestra [coll] – [Composers Recordings]

Cousin Mary   11/3/2010   12-inch, A Library

This 1957 recording with legendary conductor Leopold Stokowski (1882-1977) highlights two 20th century compositions that are beautiful and accessible but still original. Harrison’s piece, like much of his music, uses gamelan (here symphony members behave as one) and Cowell’s Persian Set was influenced by music heard in Iran. The result is undeniably western but with hints of the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and India. Atmospheric, might be considered cinematic.
