Album Review

Lowe, Frank Quartet – “Lowe-down and Blue” – [CIMP Records]

Cousin Mary   2/9/2010   CD, Jazz

Recorded 8 days before Frank Lowe was to have surgery and one year before his death from lung cancer, this album gives us yet another reason to miss this great sax player???s fine tone and originality in improvisation. Fine work from bass Dominic Duval, some killer drum solos from Michael Carvin, and the unique guitar of Bern Nix. (Do you think jazz guitar ended with Wes Montgomery? Check out Bern Nix.) Tracks are based on compositions from various jazz greats and there is a rendition of Willie Nelson???s ???Crazy??? that picks up where Patsy Cline left off.

PGM: Track 2 has some very quiet spots including one with about 4:14 remaining, another with 2:51 remaining, but keep the faith, it does have great music through the end!?? Excellent liner notes from Lowe, also the engineer and producer.
