Gay Beast – “Second Wave” – [Skin Graft Records]

Max Level   8/11/2009   A Library, CD

Aggressively noisy rock with synth/keyboards, guitar, drums, and vocals. A few sax lines too. The songs are sort of deranged and always charging forward, and there are tons of entertainingly manic ideas. If there’s a catchy riff, don’t expect it to last long so you can whistle along with it; this is ambitious, ever-changing music played with pure crash-and-burn energy. Most of the words are unintelligible to me, so I can’t really tell what they’re about; possibly queer/feminist issues, which the band has been known for. I don’t care, though, because what I like about this CD is the way it never stops raging; listening to it feels a little bit like getting gang-mugged. It sounds just the way a good Gay Beast should.

Hey, thanks for the review! We have a couple LA-vicinity dates coming up on our west coast tour:

7.07.10 Isla Vista, CA @ Biko Co-op
7.08.10 Palm Springs, CA @ Tangerine Treehouse
7.09.10 Los Angeles, CA @ Pehrspace w/ XBXRX

Maybe see y'all there? We'll have copies of our recent two 7" releases with us. Perhaps a station copy could be arranged, or we could send preview tracks...get in touch with us in any case at our Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/gaybeast
