Coleman, Ornette Double Quartet – “Free Jazz – a Collective Improvisation” – [Atlantic (Jazz)]
Landmark free jazz recording with Coleman on alto sax, Don Cherry on pocket trumpet, Scott La Faro and Charlie Haden on bass, Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet, Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Billy Higgins and Ed Blackwell on drums ??? is there anyone missing? Played by 2 ???opposing??? quartets and recorded in one 1961 session ??? ???First Take??? is a shorter track that is more of the same as ???Free Jazz???.
Fine stuff with bass and drum solos that particularly appealed to me. Definitely has an element of swing that will cause toes to tap. Proves that ???free jazz??? can produce joy, not just anxiety.
