Coltrane, John – “Major Works of John Coltrane, The” – [Impulse C/O Mca]

Cousin Mary   2/16/2009   CD, Jazz

2 CD set include both versions of Ascension which were recorded on June 28, 1965. Coltrane in his usual quartet added 7 more musicians for this landmark work. Edition I was the first to be released, then JC requested that Edition II replace it ??? after listening to it more, he had decided it was the better take. Ascension has Christian overtones, but also reflects the uplifting intensity of this textured, spontaneous, free music. See page 8 of liner notes for solo order.

Om begins with chanted words and very high almost painful notes. Kulu Se Mama has an Afro-Creole influence, some vocals. Selflessness quite recognizable as a Coltrane piece.

PGM: Tchicai pronounced CHEE-khi (rhymes with sigh)
