Coleman, Ornette – “Friends and Neighbors: Ornette Live At Prince Street ” – [Flying Dutchman Prod.]
Cousin Mary 1/13/2009 12-inch, Jazz
1970 live recording that took place in a warehouse on Prince Street near Coleman’s home in NYC. Both Friends and Neighbors cuts are fun and groove ; vocals includes actual voices of neighbors.. Other cuts are more characteristic of Ornette — challenging and avant-garde.
Fun facts:
Ornette Coleman and Dewey Redman met in the marching band of their Fort Worth high school.
Bob Thiele was a former Coltrane producer and Impulse! Records A&R man. He founded the Flying Dutchman label intending to do a line of jazz-based records that would sell and be played on the radio.
