Child Abuse/ZS [coll] – [Zum]

Thurston Hunger   10/8/2008   7-inch, A Library

Zum Records comes up with another schizo seven inch. Local
project Child Abuse blenderize cookie monster vox with a nearly
prog keyboardist and kick-ass drummer and noisy blurblings
dripped on top. Their first piece is evidently an Eric Dolphy
cover, and yet it is truly their own. The second piece is an
annoyed droid rapping over more of the off-beat time sigs and
beat-off electronics.

Child Abuse may be the “mainstream” act ;> On the flip side
ZS from Brooklyn have team-shouted vocals, monotone from the
madding crowd. Stream of consciousness dream scene is made
with what sounds like one of those old Roland guitar synths
and also some slippery slide guitar, bang-on-a-can percussion
moves to aid with the raving lunatic hammering on a dumpster
effect. Arguably a bizarro insane clown posse ;> Sax checks in
to make sure the avant are unguarded. Staccato sureness
shows the music sheets beneath the melee. A well choreographed
fire drill. Completely un-catchy and completely fantastic! Kudos
to Sam Hillmer (saxophone), Ben Greenberg (guitar) and Ian
Antonio (drums).
