Wierd Compilation Volume II: Analog Electronic Music 2008 [coll] – [Wierd Records]

Thurston Hunger   7/9/2008   12-inch, A Library

Sic and sicker sounds, spy versus spy, wierd versus weird versus
wired. Dangling analog anguish…twitching on the dance floor
moments…but life is not just a Cabaret Voltaire old chum.
Let your eyes strobe back and forth between today in 2008 and
5 years ago when the Wierd beard, Peter Schoolwerth started
setting up dark urges in Williamsburg, NY. DJ gigs and nice
collisions of bands too it appears, Double Leopards somehow
jumped out of the folky forest into the electric Frying Pan.
With 8 sides of vinyl here to check out, you really do need
to needle about depending on if you want the powerdrone (a
short sit-in with the Hive Mind), the stark faux classical
keys VNVing (Martial Canterel), le French estrangment of
Xeno and Oaklander’s gorgeous “Celeste”. Sleep Museum delivers
a “bitter is beautiful” take on “Nepal [Departure]”; Ronin’s
croaky ode over mismatched blurgles; Envenomist’s tortured
coils of whorl. Cool Grecian formula connectoin works in to
keep the gray area back in black wave. Nice noir noise and
lots of non-noise for the inorganic fans, a lot of range on
the deranged and detached. Familiar artists, some in new
guises/projects but plenty like the two from Greece that are
introduced here to KFJC.
