A Band – “A Band ” – [Qbico]

Max Level   8/27/2007   12-inch, A Library

Seriously disturbed instrumental/vocal improv, recorded over a couple of days in England 1991. This group is referred to as “A” Band, due to their tendency to perform live under names such as Antidote, Adversity, Arachnid, etc.) They were a large ensemble that varied in membership during its existence, but it was anchored by Richard Youngs, Neil Campbell, and Jim Plaistow. Sonically indescribable surrealistic freakout with horns, flutes, keyboards, guitars, percussion, male and female voices talking/ yelling, stuff crashing and breaking, crazy electronic effects… the musical direction changes every few minutes as many different sections were edited/mixed into continuous side-long pieces. Brilliant and definitely not for the timid listener.
QBICO limited edition of 350.

I see the A Band are back in action again with a few gigs recently. Disturbed...I hope so.

Thanks, Numa. I just looked that up, and found the following:

"... In April 2007, the group were announced as performers at the 4th Festival Of Improvised Music at the Pyramid in Warrington, which took place on June 16th. Billed as "Afterclap", the line up included Walden (who has since changed his name to Stewart Keith), Campbell, Lent, Higginson, Foster, Woodward, Jon Lander, Fletcher, Fletcher Jr. (1st appearance - accordion), Dylan Bates, Pascal Nichols (1st appearance - percussion) and Joincey (1st appearance - mouth noise).

The next performance, as "American Evil", was on 19 August in Shoreditch, London. On this occasion Stewart Keith and Sharen Woodward were the only regulars of nine players to perform; the seven debutants were John Aziz, Martin Bizarro, Zoe Darling, Phil Julian (of Cheapmachines), Simon Murphy, Phil Todd (of Ashtray Navigations) and Karl Waugh..."

Quite a few new people involved, but nice to see the tradition lives on!
