Zagers, Jeff – “All For The Love of Sunshine” – [Wharf Cat Records]

Naysayer   5/2/2016   A Library, CD

The idea of what is an American standard song has expanded from the days of Gershwin, Porter, and Lerner and Loewe. It is now more inclusive, going to country and western, blues, and 70’s and 80’s pop songs. Electronic and folk DIY lo-fi artist Jeff Zagers has taken this new twist on “standard” to record 13 classic and obscure songs about love and all involved with that. Covering composers as diverse as Roy Orbison, Townes Van Zandt, Wally Lewis and Arthur Russell, Zagers strips down the production keeping the instrumentation delicate yet quirky. Synth driven beats sounding like 1980’s casiotone set the groundwork for Zagers guitar playing and folk inspired singing. A heartfelt yet mournful set, just like love itself.
