Album Review
Panda Bear – “Person Pitch ” – [Paw Tracks]
Thurston Hunger 5/3/2007 A Library, CD
You already love this album. Seriously KFJC added the 7″ for
“I’m Not” b/w “Comfy in Nautica” and then “Good Girl/Carrots”
was just up and in the KFJC airstream on that split with
Excepter. Even some of the artwork is brought back here,
but that’s cool as this is exceptional pop. How someone can
create instant nostalgia, I dunno…but Noah Lennox sure has
the recipe. His vocals are washed in distance, the guitars
sound like they’re built out of music boxes. It’s weird how
this album can sound like it’s ready to break down and cry
at a moment’s notice, but still put a smile on your face.
Fragile agility? Lennox has a great collage sense in cobbling
these tracks together…while he may grab actual seashore
samples as in “Search for Delicious” even the land-locked
tracks have an aquatic sense. A gentle ebb and flow of
synths, and again his pop sense is as assured as the tides
themselves. Top notch stuff! While each track will be quickly
reconizable as Panda Bear (Lennox as an interesting voice to
match his production skills), his pinpoint style opens up
into a whole other horizon of sound. –
