Smoke, Alex – “Shminimal Ep ” – [Vakant]

Thurston Hunger   3/17/2007   12-inch, A Library

Digging this label for minimal beats that have a fair amount of evolve
to them… “Titti” is a round mound of dub sound, bottomless bass that
can pop your solar plexus if cranked properly. Squirgles on top and a
forwards-backwards-forwards short keyboard riff…halfway thru things
get pretty naked, and a more plinky element is added, things thicken
back up and finally a pretty bleak outro. Slow this down to 28 RPM and
it gets mighty menacing. “TV is Pish” is a little more driven, like
driving blind down a freeway…you keep clanking into the siderail,
right on beat…every once in a while you hit something and it goes
flying over your head, through your headphones. Eventually you pass
some Detroit techno as well as the Detroit Tiger’s baseball organist.
Lastly, the closer “Slippers and Slappers” starts out as a video
battle game, but goes off on a great dark, sinuous journey…coming
to a near sputter (deeper than glitch) stop and then firing up some
rocket bass boost that gets out in the galaxy where old Artificial
Intelligence sounds are found…very, very nice!
