Album Review

Cocoon, The – “While The Recording Engineer Sleeps” – [Staubgold]

Thurston Hunger   7/7/2015   A Library, CD

Re-issue of a 1985 German album with a genius title. Members
connected to Phantom Payn Dayz and and 39 Clocks (two bands
we have De Stijl reissues of). Lyrics in English, have an
off-the-cuff, back-of-a-napkin vibe. “I Can See Voices” &
“Bag Lady”for example just sort of tack onto the underlying
music. Spoken more than sung, working word repetition, maybe
a German take on V.U. delivery? Music is frequently vamped
on slow chord moves, allowing flute to flicker about, or
some vibes to wash over you. It’s a pretty relaxed album.
Not driven “Kraut rock” and no trace of No Wave anxiety.
My favorite track, “Seems Like I Can’t LSD Your Mind” is
less psych trippy and more a warm bath in the dark (glad
the engineer woke up long enough to add in some backing
chorus vox humana to that piece). Is this a version of
Einsturzende Neubaten as a lounge band?
