Jones, Darius Featuring The Elizabeth-Caroline Unit – “Oversoul Manual, The” – [Aum Fidelity]
Cousin Mary 2/11/2015 A Library, CD
Composed and produced by saxophonist Darius Jones – but this is not jazz and is not instrumental. Four women’s voices as solos and various combinations produce this astonishingly original sound. The voices are lush, the effect is sonorous, and if you were to try to ascribe a genre, it would probably be modern classical opera. Maybe. The premise is that this takes place on the planet Or’gen. In order to reproduce, three or more beings enter a spiritual state by performing this 15-part piece. The libretto in the liner notes is written phonetically in our alphabet. As an alternative to the track listing’s language made up of dots, deltas, etc. I found that you can use notation for “Oversoul Manual/ part N”. Very beautiful and unearthly.
