Van Hove, Fred – “Complete Vogel Recordings” – [Vogel]

Naysayer   2/4/2015   CD, Jazz

Fred Van Hove is the Belgian pianist extraordinaire whose conceptual and free jazz approach is often focused with a performance art style in mind. Also trained as an accordionist, church organist, carillionist, improviser and composer, his approach toward piano jazz is at times abstract almost to the point of incoherence and implosion. This is good.
On these two CD’s, recorded in places Belgium from 1972 to 1974, Van Hove demonstrates his piano styling acumen in three solos on CD two. At times standard based, then exploding into free jazz chaos, he wrestles with timbre, tone, and color filling in spaces with nuance. These are virtuoso performances.
CD 1 demonstrates Van Hove in more of his performance art stylings. Note the picture playing to an auditorium filled with balloons. There is the pairing with sax, drums and bass as well as Van Hove playing hammond organ (sounding beautifully like it is going to fall over at any minute. This is mind expanding stuff.
