Atlantics, The – “Greatest Hits” – [Cbs Records]
Many current day surf musicians refer to the original Atlantics as before their time, never duplicated, and very unique possibly due to their isolation in Australia. This album, released in 1965, demonstrates that their sound was quite different from other surf bands playing in the early 1960’s. The Atlantics still play with the fine addition of Martin Cilia, but the importance of these early recordings remains. An interesting example is “War of the Worlds” which explores a nuclear holocaust – in theory the first species to come back would be birds, heard in the guitar at the end of the track.
